Scholarship Application Information

  • PURPOSE:

    To encourage and promote the pursuit of a career in Maine’s water and wastewater profession

  • DEADLINE:

    April 1st , annually

  • AMOUNT OF AWARD:

    Minimum $1,000 scholarships – the number and value may fluctuate annually as funding allows

  • SELECTION PROCESS:

    The recipients will be selected by the Maine Water Utility Scholarship Fund Board

  • TERMS OF PAYMENT:

    The scholarships will be payable after successful completion of the first semester at an accredited undergraduate institution of learning. This is a one-time payment and is non-renewable.

Maine Water Utilities Scholarship Funds

The Maine Water Utilities Scholarship Fund (MWUSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was developed to encourage and promote the pursuit of careers in Maine’s water and wastewater profession through the administration of a scholarship program.

Judy Wallingford Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by the Maine Water Company in recognition of Judy Wallingford’s distinguished career of service to Maine customers and communities as President of Maine Water Company from 1992 to 2017 and as President of the Maine Water Utilities Association in 2005.

Specific Eligibility:

  • Completion of at least a semester at an accredited college, university, or community college in a program such as environmental studies, environmental or civil engineering, water resource management, or other program related to the water works profession or considered as beneficial to water resource management in Maine

Selection Criteria:

  • – Demonstrated academic performance
  • – Based on merit and character, regardless of field of study
  • – Preference given to applicants with a connection to Maine

Madeleine A. Storer and Peter A. Lancaster Scholarships

These scholarships are sponsored by the Maine Water Utilities Association and its supporting members.

The Madeleine A. Storer Scholarship is in memory of Madeleine Storer, who was instrumental in the formation of the board that raises funds annually to make the scholarship possible.

The Peter A. Lancaster Scholarship commemorates the life and work of the Bangor Water District’s late construction supervisor, Peter Lancaster.

Specific Eligibility:

  • Completion of at least a semester at an accredited college, university, or community college

Selection Criteria:

  • – Preference given to applicants having work experience in the water or wastewater field, including internships
  • – Demonstrated academic performance
  • – Interest in pursuing a career in the water or wastewater field
  • – Preference given to applicants with a connection to Maine

Stanley G. McCurdy Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by Everett J. Prescott Inc. in honor of Stanley McCurdy.  Stan dedicated 62 years of his life to a career at EJP.  He held many roles within the company leading to his promotion to Chief Operating Officer, a title he held for the majority of his career.  His achievements demonstrated his strong work ethic and a legacy career of service to the water industry. Stan was a kind, giving man and generously supported the MWUA Scholarship Fund since its inception.

Specific Eligibility:

  • Completion of at least a semester at an accredited college, university, or community college

Selection Criteria:

  • – Demonstrated academic performance
  • – Preference given to applicants with experience at a water or wastewater facility or service provider
  • – Expressed interest in pursuing a career in the water or wastewater field
  • – Preference given to applicants with a connection to Maine
